LGBTQ* Poets You Should Know

Lesbian Eloise Klein Healy named LA’s first Poet Laureate

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Friday that lesbian poet Eloise Klein Healy has been named as the City of Los Angeles’ first Poet Laureate.

“As the arts and culture capital of the world, Los Angeles’ 4 million residents and 26 million annual visitors deserve a Poet Laureate to elegantly express the beauty of our city in words,” Villaraigosa said in a press release before the formal announcement at the LA Library. “While each of the nominees demonstrated a command of the written word, Eloise Klein Healy’s work highlighted the truly innovative and imaginative nature of our City’s literary genius. I am proud to have her serve as the Ambassador to our City’s vibrant poetry and literary culture.”

Healy is well known in the LGBT and LA literary scene. An accomplished poet, professor and editor over three decades, she is the author of seven books of poetry, including The Islands Project: Poems for Sappho (2007) for which she was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Poetry and Publishing Triangle’s Audre Lorde Lesbian Poetry Prize. Her newest book of poetry A Wild Surmise: New and Selected Poems & Recordings will come out March 2013 from Red Hen Press.

Obama Nominates Openly Lesbian Latina Judge to Federal Court

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama nominated Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. If selected, Quiñones Alejandro would be the first openly lesbian Latina judge on the federal bench.

Quiñones Alejandro currently serves on the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas and became the first Hispanic women to serve on that branch when she accepted the position in 1991. She has also worked in the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs as a lawyer and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as an attorney advisor.

There are currently six vacant seats on the federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Along with Quiñones Alejandro, President Obama nominated Judge Luis Felipe Restrepo and Judge Jeffery L. Schmehl. In a White House press release, President Obama stated ”These men and women have had distinguished legal careers, and I am honored to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench…They will serve the American people with integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice.”

President Obama has nominated eight openly-gay judges to federal court since he took office in 2009. Three of those eight nominations have been confirmed.

World AIDS Day is important to me because we are fighting against the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS. We are helping people understand the importance of HIV and AIDS and how it impacts our communities. It also raises awareness and promotes risk reduction for our friends, family and loved ones.

World AIDS Day is important to me because it highlights an important issue that should be recognized everyday. It’s a good opportunity to educate people who may not think that it affects them, while also spreading awareness about available resources. I am going to recognize the day by wearing a t-shirt that on the front says, “Got AIDS?,” and on the back says, “How do you know?” It’s an easy way to get people’s attention and get them to really think.

Just wanted to share a new YouTube channel that started about two weeks ago! It’s called Trans API Voices, a channel of five transmen and one transwoman, all of Asian decent!

We realized that there wasn’t many Asian trans* identified people sharing their stories, so we thought we would start a channel!

So please, kick back this Thanksgiving and enjoy a good meal guilt-free (or attend an anti-colonial protest) with friends if your family get on your nerves. Then go volunteer at the shelter another day—weekly or monthly, because like any other activity—biking, dancing, fucking—you’ll be more skilled if you do it more than once a year.”

At TWLOHA, we believe healing and freedom exist in the spaces where people can be honest about their struggles. For this reason, we are longtime fans and supporters of PostSecret. Each Sunday, the PostSecret website gives people a place for such transparency. Even in their anonymity, the colorful postcards confessions have become a symbol of the companionship found even in the most difficult of circumstances.

This Sunday, one individual’s submission hit a little closer to home. It expressed the isolation and rejection they felt from others for having “mental problems”—and it was scrawled across a To Write Love on Her Arms info card, our logo woven beneath the white ink.

What’s the story behind this card, and who sent it in? What team “kicked them out” because of the fear and misunderstanding that so often surrounds mental health issues? What troubles has this person faced (or continues to face)? We don’t know the answers to these questions. But for whatever reason, TWLOHA was chosen as a visual representation of the “problems” referenced and the events that occurred because of them. And we see that as an opportunity.

The experience shared on this postcard is certainly not limited to the person who submitted it and tells us there is still work to be done. While some might only see a problem, we have to remind them of a solution. While some might try to distance themselves, we want to push through and offer truth, encouragement, and support.

Those who experience such struggles, however lonely they may feel, are one of a great many. Our desire is that this individual—and any who might resonate with their words—would be assured of the same. We value any chance to be there in the background, woven into the stories and secrets, the trials and triumphs.
